ON DRUGS

I am currently reading "The Dirt," which is essentially an autobiography of the band Motley Crue (umlauts go over some of the letters, but I can't figure that out through blogger). And one thing about Motley Crue - they did a lot of drugs. A lot. Seriously. There are elephants that couldn't take as much up their nose as each member of the band did...on any given Tuesday.

Drugs have never had much of an allure for me. Maybe it's because I had a very different upbringing than, you know, Motley Crue, and I was educated on the dangers of drugs at a young age (not from my parents, though...although they spoke enough about alcohol and cigarettes that the IDEA of drugs was anathema to me). Maybe it's because I don't think the long-term effects of drugs offset the short-term "benefits." Or maybe because I think that doing coke or other euphoria-inducers (my term) are like cheating, and I've never really liked cheating.

I was speaking with Chuck (not a podcast conversation, a regular one) and we were both amazed that anyone would actually start a "hard" drug like meth or coke in this day and age. And crack...there is nothing positive associated with crack. Even the name doesn't sound appealing. Why would anyone start smoking crack?

I don't pretend to understand it. Maybe a different band said it best...the band Cinderella, from their song "Shelter Me."

Everybody needs a little place they can hide
[With winter comin' on]* don't let nobody inside
Don't let nobody inside
Every now and then we all need to let go
For some it's the doctor
For me it's rock and roll
For some it's a bottle
For some it's a pill
Some people wave the bible, cause it's giving them a thrill
Others point their finger if they don't like what they see
If you live in a glass house, don't be throwing rocks at me

Ah, hair metal...you're so wise!

*(Note: this is how I hear the lyrics. The internet tells me I'm wrong.)
