ON TIMING:
Just when you think you have it all figured out...just when you know the perfect time to proceed...just when you are ready to take a metaphorical plunge off a metaphorical high dive into a metaphorical pool, a life guard blows the whistle and calls for the adult swim. Blerg.
I've tried to be more adaptable. While taking the "Stengthsquest" evaluation several years ago, adaptability came up as one of my top three strengths. My friends and co-workers were dumbfounded by this - I defended the finding by saying that just because I complained about having to adapt didn't mean I wasn't adapting. Since then, I've tried to limit the complaining. Tried, of course, being the operative word.
There's an Orson Scott Card story in which a character's car doesn't start for like ten minutes, then, because he's running late, he runs over a child. That would be the opposite of my point. I've found that the cases in my life in which my plans either change or get delayed work out for the best.
Obviously, I've recently had plans changed on me through no fault of my own. And while I was initially bothered by it, I have to tell myself that it's keeping me from running over a kid. Metaphorically.
